Started because a parcel went missing and nobody could say where.
In 2009 a consignment of medical samples left Newark, NJ and never arrived. Four phone calls in, the honest answer was that nobody knew which van it had been on.
That is a records problem, not a logistics problem. So the company was built the other way round: the ledger first, the vans second. Before a parcel moves anywhere it has a code, and before it changes hands somebody puts their name against it. There is no automated “scanned at facility” event, because a scanner does not know who was holding the box.
17 years on it is the same idea at a larger size. 3 sorting hubs, our own line-haul between them, and the contiguous 48 states covered. What has not changed is that any customer can read the whole chain of custody for their parcel, in the same words our own staff wrote, without asking anyone's permission.

What we will not do.
We do not hand parcels to partner networks to reach an address, because the record stops at the handover and we will not publish a trail with a hole in it. Where we cannot go ourselves, we say so and tell you who can.
We also do not delete anything. A parcel recorded in error is cancelled and stays visible, and a correction is a new entry rather than a rewrite of the old one. It makes the ledger less tidy and much more useful.
